about.
Meg Severino (b. 2004), is a Filipino artist based in Singapore. She is a multi-disciplinary artist, creating works ranging from painting, and textile patchwork sculptures, to poetry, music, and video installations. Her art delves into her Filipino identity, more specifically her burdens of body image as a Filipina woman in a world where she feels underrepresented.
She challenges issues around postcolonial criticism through a childlike form of expression to contrast the perceived burdens of her Filipino identity. From dealing with racism, and bullying to isolation growing up as “the Other” in Singapore, her mediums are her salvation. With an affinity for creating self-portraits, she firmly believes that it is a form of representing the Self in a world where she feels overlooked. She aims to be a voice for Filipinos in the Singapore contemporary art scene, hoping to foster understanding in the Southeast Asian arts ecosystem through questioning Filipina visibility and invisibility. She hopes that her works bring solace to the marginalised, by promoting discussions of unlearning shame. She has participated in exhibitions such as Singapore-grown art community GOFY For Art’s Sake in 2023, where she reimagined an iconic Western painting by Jacques-Louis David in a Southeast-Asian narrative, touching on Femcel culture and the psychological effects of popular media. She showcased her works in Menagerie, the Year 1 Showcase at Selegie Arts Centre. She has also participated in pop-up events such as Curbside Crafters x Gelato’s Local Art Fair, where she sold prints from her Instagram account, @c0okiejarred. She is a graduate of Catholic Junior College, and now pursuing her passion in the BA (Hons) Fine Art Degree in Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts-University of Arts London (NAFA-UAL). She is currently based in Singapore to complete her course of study. She also creates music on YouTube and Soundcloud.
